I am a believer that if you are dedicated enough to get up and report to a 9 to 5 or some other full time job working for someone else, then you should seriously consider starting your own home based side gig.
You may be asking ” well why do you say that, Monica?”
Well for women, it is documented that for every dollar men are paid, women are only paid 0.80 cents on that same dollar and minority women are paid even less.
I’ve gained pay increases by accepting new jobs with a higher salary while moving from company to company, but I have still been paid less than my male counterparts each time I’ve accepted a new position.
The main reason why I’ve always had a side gig is because I can price my products or services the same or higher than those who provide similar products or services. I am in control of my business, what I do and how I do it. The goals for my side gigs was to increase my savings, to travel more and to start other side gigs.
The best part is that I have done very well financially from my side gigs.
We don’t have that level of “freedom” to make process or procedural changes that positively impact the wallets in our designer handbags while working for someone else. I keep my 9 to 5 because it provides me with multiple forms of insurance and other benefits that could potentially cost more if I paid for them as a business owner. I also use the skills that I’ve gained from the 9 to 5 to benefit the business of my side gig.
Having side gigs have been some of the most rewarding aspects of my life!
